Introduction to The Middle Eastern Tar Drum

Throughout
the ancient Mediterranean world, the Great Goddess is
portrayed with her frame drum. Its beat is the pulse
of all life. Powerful, trance-inducing, it's the oldest
known drum traditionally played by women in ancient
rites. This drum has been made popular in the West by
such masters as Layne Redmond, Randy Crafton, and Glen
Velez, all of whom I've studied with and been influenced
by.
Whenever I play this drum for people, or a cd on which
this drum is played, it's sound is like a magnet! Learn
all the strokes, techniques and their embellishments
on the drum, the rhythm patterns for "knee position"
and "standing position" playing — both
are quite different. Usually offered as a 2–3
hour workshop; follow-up workshops when there is interest.
This is open to both men and women, and no prior experience
is needed. Drums provided and available for purchase,
or you may bring your own appropriate frame drum. |

"I
enjoyed your workshop very much, and I learned
some techniques for drumming which I'm very pleased
about. I love this new instrument, and I hope
soon to have more classes or workshops wtih you
on the frame drumming technique. I want to become
as comfortable playing the drum as I am dancing.
You are very talented and inspiring, I'm happy
to have met you."

feminine drum. I love the circle of women in rhythm."

"Just a note to say thanks again for the
wonderful workshop and lesson on our "drumming
heritage". Once in a while we meet people
who we have a definite connection through spirit.
I felt this with you. You are a very special teacher."

"Your seminar last Sunday proved a very special
day and a wonderful gathering. Your talent, creativity
and obvious enthusiasm for what you do was a pleasure
to experience. I truly hope we will have more
opportunities to gather and share in your knowledge
(and joy of rhythm)!
