The
frame drum is most basic, universal drum. It is defined as any hand-drum with a head diameter that is greater than the depth of its shell. They can be circular, rectangular, octagonal, square... many shapes exist depending on cultural preference. It is often played with the
whole hand, using common, easy rhythms.
The non-jingled, round frame drum from the N. African and Mediterranean part of the world, is often called the Tar, but also goes by Daff, Duff, Deff....
When we travel, I usually come home with new rhythms
to play this way! (Frame drums are great for travel,
being relatively small and flat.)
In the whole hand playing style of "Everyone Can Play the Frame Drum", you will learn some Arabic, Brasilian and Nubian folkloric styles and rhythms to get you started.
In response to popular demand! "Middle Eastern Finger Style" technique workshops teach the more intricate, sophisticated, Arabic style and rhythms. This is different from the folkloric, whole hand style in that it's more refined, delicate, yet strong, and requires fine motor finger skills versus the whole-hand playing style.
"Middle Eastern Finger Style" is especially great for those who have taken Jeff's whole-hand frame drum workshop, or Middle Eastern tambourine classes with Barbara.
Whether it's the Whole Hand Folkloric workshop, or the Fancy Finger Style workshop, that insterests you, all drums are provided, available for purchase, or b.y.o.. No previous experience is needed, and all adults, motivated teens (and youth ages 9 and up with instructor permission), are welcome.
