a beat! Structured group activity emphasizing body
awareness, self-expression, self-esteem, group support,
respect, social skills.
Whole-hand Frame Drumming

In our travels we repeatedly meet people playing basic
rhythms on what is the most universal drum.
Brasilian Samba

Have you heard of surdo, caixa, agogo, cuica, tamborim,
claves, pandeiro, rocar, reco-reco, caxixi, ganza,
xequere, triangulo? We have them and will create a
lively samba percussion ensemble with any group.
Cuban Conga
M, H, C, A
These rich-toned drums can stand aloneor acccompany
any style of music. Using Cuban techniques we begin
with Tumbao Moderno, a great, universal rhythm. Other
specific rhythms may be requested.
Celtic Bodhran and Bones
M, H, C, A
Many have learned by just swinging the sticks until
teh magic happened. We have developed techniques for
successfully teaching these amazing instruments.
West African Djembe
M, H, C, A
The most popular hand-drum. Learn the language of
the drum, pulse exercises, playing techniques, polyrhythmic
ensemble. Polymeters 2:3, 3:4, 4:6 can be included.
West African Style Rhythm Ensemble

Learn all parts to a piece using djun-djuns (bass
drums); axatse, shekere, caxixis (shakers); gankogui,
atoke (bells); claves, and djembes.
Other Voices of Percussion Ensembles

Special techniques and basic rhythms to get great
sounds from the important voices of bells, shakers,
claves, woodblocks, guiros (scrapers), bass drums.
Everyone is provided with his or her own, colorful
collection.
Middle Eastern Tambourine

Learn the history and language of this intriguing
drum, pulse exercises, intricate finger-style playing
techniques, processional drumming, poly-rhythmic ensemble.
Odd time signatures available for advanced students.
Getting Polymeter
H, C, A
There may be more benefits to getting polymeter skills
in your body that you ever imagined. Putting our feet
in one meter and hands in another, we can get you
doing 2 against 3, 3 against 4, 3 against 5, 4 against
5, 4 against 6. Then flip them over, or divide them
between hands.
Drum Tuning

The basics and finer points of drum tuning to yield
instruments that are responsive, more fun to play,
and provide more musical possibilities. We are proficient
at care, tuning, and repair of any type of hand drum.

Dance

no matter your shape or size. Supportive, non-judgmental,

Ecstatic Dance and the Creative Self

group creative process. Alone, in partnership, and
together, we explore dynamic movement to diverse pieces
of music, shifting from self-consciousness to self-expression.

Barbara
Gail, BA Education, and Jeff
Hanna, are partners in life and work.
Together they run The Rhythm Inlet retail store
and The Space
at the The Rhythm Inlet drum and dance
studio, im Mt. Vernon, Maine. They provide New England's
most comprehensive, retail selection of world hand-drums
and percussion instruments; the most knowledgeable
sales service available so you can make informed choices
for yourself, school, or organization; expert repair
services; The Space's exciting programs with
various teachers; and their own offerings of classes,
workshops, community programs, and performances, for
schools, conferences, retreats, and adult education
statewide and beyond.
They perform in the Samba troupe, Tudo da Samba,
and the Caribbean steel drums and percussion band,
Coconut Groove, both of which Jeff also directs.
In addition, Barbara is hand-drummer/percussionist/harmony
vocalist in The Leah Wolfsong Trio, and Director
of Moonrise: Daughters of an Ancient Pulse,
an all-women's frame drum group.
Jeff and Barbara, both skilled teachers, are making
it their life's work to spread the joys of rhythm
and movement to people of all ages, abilities and
challenges.
