Ukulele Adventures with Richard Gilewitz (For Beginner thru Advanced)
Ain't got rhythm? Timing a bit off? Rhythm & food can help you expand your playing techniques & timing. Choose watermelons or pineapples, pop tarts or scrambled eggs from the rhythmic food chart to grill up some tasty tunes. This fun, easy approach to strumming, clapping, clopping, thwacking, & minimal fingerpicking is beneficial to beginners & seasoned players.

Know how to strum, but feel stuck in a rut? Tired of playing the same tunes that lack sparkle? Ukulele Adventures explores how to open your fingers with the Fingerpicking Engine, a down-to-earth, systematic approach adapted from Gilewitz's time-honored 6 & 12-string finger-style guitar techniques. Learn some basic picking patterns based on banjo style & classical arpeggios, pinch patterns, pairing, & inside & forward rolls.

You'll develop a tune from his book, "Fingerstyle Ukulele", for a group jam using fingerpicking, strumming, & clapping. Learn to toggle your mind by focusing on your own playing & listening to the other players in the room. Sing along to top off the jam session or try a few hot licks of your own.

A master teacher, Richard conducts clinics sponsored by major music gear companies, offers guitar & ukulele workshops globally, & teaches at his annual Florida GillaCamp, & privately online. He's a published Mel Bay Publications instructor, & has released several videos with TrueFire.com.

Full Moon Rhythmic Wisdom Meditation for Women
Friday, 6:30pm. Join a room full of women for this unique & rare opportunity to experience a Full Moon Rhythmic Wisdom Meditation, DrumJourney, & Empowering Drum Circle, all led by Drumming Priestess Barbara Gail. The first named female drummer known was Lipushiau, the highest ranking Priestess in the city-state of Ur, in Mesopotamia, around 2380 B.C.E. Throughout the Ancient Mediterranean World, the drummers were predominantly women. Sacred drumming was one of the primary skills of Priestesses, who used the beats of their frame drums to rouse community consciousness & attain spiritual awareness for healing & divination. In keeping with that tradition, Barbara Gail, Ordained Minister & Drumming Priestess, facilitates a unique & different type of meditation experience, as the group is enlivened in a shared ritual of sound, vibration, rhythm & altered consciousness. With the beat of her drum, her voice, heart & spirit as your guides, you'll experience a rhythmic meditation, inner vision journey, & an empowering rhythm & drumming circle. Please bring any drums or percussion instruments you might have. Not to worry if you don't, she'll bring extras. Looking forward to seeing you, as we release The Power of the Women Drummers! This is a free event. Contributions for room rental will be collected, & tips are graciously accepted. Doors open at 6:30pm & are locked at 7pm when the meditation begins. Parking is limited; carpooling suggested. Held at Rising Tide, 5102 Swift Rd., Sarasota.

When the Drummers Were Women: Performance & Slide Show Presentation
Saturday, 8pm. This art history presentation & drum ritual performance with Barbara Gail, presents the slide show that was the basis of the book "When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual History of Rhythm", both authored by friend & teacher, the late Layne Redmond. The lost but not forgotten her-story of women as primary percussionists in Ancient Times, comes alive in over 60 images from temples & museums of actual artifacts, photographs that Layne herself took. Named Goddesses, Priestesses, & Unnamed Women are depicted playing the frame drum, the oldest known, most universal drum, dating as far back as 5600 BCE. Barbara will perform ritual drumming featuring frame drums & voice. $10 in advance, $15 the day of.
