Your instructors: Jeff Hanna and Barbara Gail, partners in life and work, began
The Rhythm Inlet Programs in 1994. They study about and travel to rhythmic cultures,
and enjoy sharing their knowledge and skills with students and the general public.
Their retail store and expert drum repair have gained attention and respect from players,
performers, teachers, students, and enthusiasts from around the U.S. and abroad.
Their high quality classes, workshops, and school programs create a positive learning
experience for all. Today they teach, perform, sell, service, repair, educate, and generally
spread the joys of rhythm and movement to people of all ages, abilities and challenges!

Advanced Ensemble Repertory Class
10 Thursdays, 6:30-8pm. Weekly classes with Jeff Hanna.
Our most advanced class, by invitation or audition only. These experienced students
are playing in full Brasilian Samba, W. African, and Afro-Cuban ensembles,
using bass drums, shakers, bells, claves, and hand-drums, creating an exciting blend
of interlocking patterns and passionate music! Rhythm variations taught and opportunities
to solo provided. Public appearances are part of this program's goal. Bass drums and
percussion instruments provided in class. Students should bring a recording device to
class and plan practice at home regularly.

Afro-Cuban Rhythm Circle for Everyone: Bembe Part 2
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
For those who experienced these trancy rhythms in the Intro workshop, and want more!
Bembe is an Afro-Cuban rhythm form of Yoruban heritage. You'll learn relatively simple
parts that interlock, creating the polymetric 6/8 aspects of this piece. Bougarabous,
congas, kpanlogos (djembes are acceptable), then claves, bells, woodblocks, and shakers
fill out the sounds of this ensemble. Instruments provided, available for purchase, or b.y.o..
(Bembe Part 1 will be offered April 14.)

West African Ensemble: Djembe, Dunduns, and Percussion
10 Mondays, 6:30-8pm. Weekly classes with Jeff Hanna.
Open to students who have completed Intermediate Djembe; or instructor permission.
With a focus on djembe, learn non-traditional and traditional W. African pieces. Expand your
experience into the full W. African drum and percussion sound, adding bass drums, shakers,
bells, and claves, creating an exciting blend of interlocking patterns and passionate music!
Bass drums and percussion instruments provided in class, yours welcome.
Students should bring recording device to classes, and plan to practice at home.

Show Me The Rhythms! Ongoing Intermediate Djembe
10 Tuesdays, 6:30-8pm. Weekly classes with Barbara Gail.
Welcome students who have taken the "Djembe Level 3" series.
Continue to deepen your relationship to the pulse, the drum and its rhythms, refine
technique, meet the challenge of new material and warm-ups, learn new embellishments,
and enjoy playing with your fellow drummers!
Best to own a drum and be practicing technique and rhythms between classes at home.
Bringing a recording device to class is highly recommended.

Introduction to Djembe Hand-drumming Workshop!

Welcome all adults, motivated teens, and youth ages 9 and up w/ instructor permission.
No musical experience needed. Learn to play the most popular hand-drum! We focus on
hand technique, learning rhythm patterns, how to find your place in the beat, and playing
as a polyrhythmic ensemble. Perfect for the raw beginner as well as folks with some
exposure who seek instruction with a solid foundation. A positive experience for all!
Note: This Workshop kicks off our weekly Beginner Djembe Series. It can stand alone as
a single experience, or serve as your opportunity to try a class before committing to
all 9 weeks. If you are prepared to register for the Series in full, there is no need to
register or pay for this Workshop, just register and pay for the Series instead (see below).
If you'd like to take this Workshop before committing to the Series, you may register and

Welcome all students, past and present, who once learned the drumsong of the evening.
Each session focuses on a drumsong from class. We'll review each rhythm thoroughly,
adding variations to rhythms when applicable. We divide the circle into our rotating parts,
then enjoy a 30-40 minute jam session! In low-level lighting, you'll groove in the zone,
your hands inspired to dance freely through the rhythms. You're not the drummer
drumming, you ARE the DRUM! Here's your chance to revisit, internalize, naturalize,
and enjoy playing the music you've worked hard to learn (even if it's been a while).
Take a break from navigating that learning curve of new material’s peaks and valleys!
Bring your music charts. Dun-duns, percussion instruments (and guidance) provided.

Welcome students who have taken the Beginner Series; or equivalent with permission.
Deepen your relationship to the drum and pulse, refine your technique, meet the
challenge of new material, and enjoy drumming with your fellow drummers! This is when
your drum lessons begin to "click", and the learning curve is more comfortable.
Recording device in class is highly recommended, to record warm-ups and rhythms.
Students should be putting some time aside for home playing/practice.

February 4
Cuban Conga Workshop: Part 2
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
Welcome students who, at any time, have taken Conga Workshop: Part 1.
The conga is a direct descendant of W. African drums, has a different hand technique
from the djembe, with a richer, warmer tone. And you'll be playing on 2 drums!
$25, includes rental set of 2 congas on stands during class.

When the Drummers Were Women: Performance and Slide Show Presentation
Friday, 8pm. An art history presentation and live sacred drum performance by Barbara Gail.
This slide show was the basis of the book "When the Drummers Were Women: A Spiritual
History of Rhythm", both authored by friend and teacher, Layne Redmond. The forgotten
her-story of women as primary percussionists in the Ancient Mediterranean World, comes
alive in over 60 images from temples and museums. Named Goddesses, Priestesses, and
Unnamed Women are depicted playing the frame drum, the oldest known, most universal
drum, dating as far back as 5600 BCE. Barbara will play frame drum and Middle Eastern

Everyone Can Play the Frame Drum!
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
Welcome all adults, motivated teens, and youth ages 9 and up w/ instructor permission.
Learn to play the oldest known, and most universal hand-drum, found in indigenous
cultures worldwide. Many folkloric traditions include some sort of frame drum,
often played with the bare, whole hand, a style suitable for beginners and all levels.
We'll focus on some cool Arabic, Nubian and Brazilian techniques and rhythms.
Drums provided, available for purchase, or b.y.o..
No musical experience needed. This is a drum EVERYONE can play!

The Magic of Drum and Dance for the Young Child! (and the adults who love them!)
8 Tuesdays: 4-5pm. Classes with Barbara Gail, B.A. Education,
who has been teaching and developing this program since 1994.
Welcome pre-schoolers ages 1 thru 5, infant siblings, early elementary children, too.
Ages 2 & 1/2, and up, may benefit most, but all children learn and grow in our circle!
Play drums, rattles, bells, move your body, dance a beat! "Welcome Cheer" opens our
circle, “coloring” at the end integrates the experience. A child-centered class, joyfully
exploring expressive rhythm and dance activities that emphasize listening, sharing,
respect, leading, following, cooperative social skills, and develop body awareness,
spatial orientation, and sense of self, all in a positive style. Enjoy quality time with your
child! Children blossom with us! Instruments provided. Infant siblings: free.

The Bass Drums of West Africa

Welcome returnees, and students with at least a little drum experience if you're new to
these boombooms. Learn about the heartbeat of West African drumming, the bass drum
family known as Dunduns, or Djundjuns. Jeff will cover the basics, backbone, elements,
techniques, and of course some fun 'n' funky rhythms that drive the hand-drummers
and dancers into high energy. Limited to the first 6 pre-paid registrants.

Middle Eastern Finger-style Frame Drumming
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
Welcome all adults and motivated teens.
Learn to play the oldest known, and most universal hand-drum, the non-jingled frame
drum, often called the Tar. This is the more intricate, sophisticated, Arabic style,
versus the folkloric, whole hand style, which was taught 2 weeks ago.
It's rhythms and sound are hypnotic! Drums provided, available for purchase, or BYO.

Join Jeff and Barbara for a hands-on, fun, and informative world drum and percussion tour!

Barbara Gail Leads Full Moon Meditation for Spring: Women Circle at Rising Tide
Friday, 6:30pm for smudging and complimentary healing; doors close and lock at 7pm.
Since January, 2006, women have been gathering twice monthly on the Fridays closest
to the new moon and full moons, for profound experiences in community, healing, ritual,
creative practices, and guided meditation. Many of our community's top group leaders,
as well as out of town guests -- all well known in their regions and beyond -- have led this
group in powerful journeys into mind, body and spirit. Since its inception of 8 women,
the group now holds 400 in its database, with about 50 in attendance each time!
Barbara is honored to be leading the circle on the Spring Equinox's full Moon, 2012!
In times gone by women were the keepers of the drum, holding the rhythms sacred.
Goddesses, Priestesses, and Unnamed women carried their stories. In this meditation,
Barbara brings the magical rhythms of breathe and body, earth and sun, women and the
moon, and percussion and drums, to our gathering. You'll enter into an altered state of
consciousness through the rhythms, and make a joyful noise!

March 10 - Warm up your Celtic Grooves for St. Paddy's Day!
Introduction to the Celtic Bodhran and The Bones
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
Welcome all adults, motivated teens, and youth ages 10 and up w/ instructor permission.
No musical experience needed.
Learn how to properly swing the double-knobbed stick, called a tipper, to play exciting
"jiggity jig" rhythms on the "Bao-rahn", "Boh-rahn" (both are correct), the flat, round
frame drum of the British Isles. We'll also cover how to play the The Bones,
a folkloric percussion instrument (once actual rib bones, now also in wood!).

Brasilian Samba Rhythms for Everyone! Part 1

For all levels, including newbies, beginners, sambistas, and Workshop returnees!
An Introduction to the Brasilian Samba Batucada! Part 1 of a 3-part series.
Part 2 will be held April 7; Part 3 will be held TBD.
In Brasil, everyone participates in samba, from grandparents to children. No matter their
social status or race, it's the music of the people, a communal expression of the joy of life.
Batucada is the name for the all-percussion ensemble that is unique to Brasil.
Come learn all the elements of this exciting style, and try your hand at playing its variety
of fun rhythm instruments. This is our favorite kind of percussion music, and we look
forward to when we can bring a group of students to Brasil to experience it there!

Exploring the Many Voices of Hand Percussion
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
Welcome all levels, no experience needed, adults, motivated teens, youth ages 9 and up.
A fun introduction to a diverse range of folkloric cowbells, shakers, scrapers, wood blocks,
from Ghana, Brasil, Dominican Republic, Cameroon, Peru, Mexico, Indonesia, Bolivia,
and other countries. These instruments can enhance the sound and energy of hand-drum
ensembles, drum circles, and multi-instrumental bands, too. Technique, groovy interlocking
rhythms, and a percussion ensemble with a full range of sound. Jeff has been developing
his knowledge and proficiency with folkloric percussion since 1991, when his non-profit,
fair trade, third and forth world craft store, Meridian Arts, Inc., began carrying all these
unique, interesting and fun musical toys.

Brasilian Samba Rhythms for Everyone! Part 2

Welcome returnees, and those who've taken our Part 1: Intro Workshop.
This is Part 2 of 3. Part 3 will be held TBD.
The joyful and upbeat sounds of Brasilian Samba continue for those who just can't get
enough of this groove! (Or even if you just want a little more!) Batucada is the name for
the all drum and percussion ensemble that is unique to Brasil. Come learn all the
elements of this exciting style, and try your hand at playing all its fun instruments.
This is our favorite kind of percussion music, and we look forward to the day when we
can bring a group of students with us to Salvador, de Bahia, Brasil!

Beyond the Beyond Beginner: Djembe 2+
Weekly classes with Barbara Gail.
Review and strengthen your Level 2 skills and rhythms.
For students who have taken Beyond Beginner classes and want to strengthen
their foundation of its techniques and material, and for those ready for Level 2
who can work at a quickened pace. As a "Level 2+" class, we'll solidify our
knowledge and playing of the "Beyond Beginner" material, namely "Balakulania"
and "Kaki Lambe", and learn some new rhythms, too, if time allows.
Recording device in class is highly recommended, to record rhythms and exercises.
Students should be putting time aside for home playing/practice.

Celebrate the 42nd Anniversary of Earth Day in this fun family event. Vendors, enlightening
earth-friendly speakers, farmer's market, and live entertainment including The Rhythm

Afro-Cuban Rhythm Circle for Everyone: Bembe Part 1
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna.
No experience needed, suitable for all levels, from beginners to advanced.
Welcome adults, motivated teens, and youth 10 and up with instructor permission.
An introduction to the Afro-Cuban Bembe Percussion Ensemble: Part 1 of 2.
Part 2 will be held TBD.
Jeff will share how simple rhythms on exotic folkloric hand-drums and percussion,
together create powerful grooves that hail from the African traditions of Cuba.
Bembe is an Afro-Cuban rhythm form of Yoruban heritage. Beginners will appreciate
the simplicity in the rhythms. Experienced students will appreciate the opportunity
to explore the polymetric 6/8 aspects to this piece.
Bougarabous, congas, kpanlogos (djembes are acceptable), then claves, bells,
woodblocks, and shakers fill out the sounds of this ensemble.

Learn to Play the Cuban Conga Drums: Part 1
1 Saturday, 2-3:30pm. Workshop with Jeff Hanna. Beginners welcome.
Welcome all adults and motivated teens, and youth with instructor permission.
This is an Intro Workshop; Part 2 will be held TBD.
The conga is a direct descendant of W. African drums, has a rich, warm tone, and its own
style of playing techniques, much different than djembe. Made popular in this country by
Desi Arnaz, the conga is the heartbeat of Latin music, and has found its way into jazz and
rock as well. Basic hand technique and rhythms will be taught. Let's Babalooooo!

Moonrise, Daughters of an Ancient Pulse: Priestess Tambourine for Women
Monthly. Pre-requisite: Barbara's introductory tambourine workshop.
A women's ritual drumming circle, learning the rhythms and techniques of playing
the tambourine in procession. Relaxing, energizing, centering, and beautiful!
This drum class is infused with rhythm, ritual, sacred space, and sisterhood.

Brasilian Samba Rhythms for Everyone! Part 3

Welcome returnees, and those who've taken our Parts 1 and 2 Workshops.
The joyful and upbeat sounds of Brasilian Samba continue for those who just can't get
enough of this groove! (Or even if you just want a little more!) Batucada is the name for
the all drum and percussion ensemble that is unique to Brasil. Come learn all the
elements of this exciting style, and try your hand at playing all its fun instruments.
This is our favorite kind of percussion music, and we look forward to the day when we
can bring a group of students with us to Salvador, de Bahia, Brasil!

A Sunday in June....
Free Drum Student Presentation & Beach Party! Everyone Welcome!
Sunday afternoon, --pm (sunset --pm). Join our students in celebrating their music!
We invite students, their friends and families, and The Rhythm Inlet support community,
to this festive event featuring potluck goodies, shmoozing, sunset, sand, and of course
drumming! #+ students will play. Guests are invited to join in the samba parade at the
end; instruments provided, or BYO. A fun way to check out what The Rhythm Inlet's all
about, and support our students! Bring: chair or beach towel, potluck food (cooler),
your own dish ware and utensils for eating and serving/cutting your dish (no throwaways,
puh-leeze!). Have a Rhythm Inlet t-shirt? Even if you're not performing, please wear it to
show your support! Also: sunglasses, hat, sunscreen, camera, and smiles! Provided:
serving tables, paper cups, napkins (a few plates and utensils for those who forgot!).
Students, bring your drum and chair or strap. Students must sign up by November 19.
Everyone else, just come on down! Dress for weather. If rain, wind or lightning, notice will

June 21, Summer Solstice: Honoring Yemanja, Goddess of the Sea
Sacred Circle: Women, Rhythm and Ritual for Solstices and Equinoxes

transitions in our lives. As the wheel turns, we clear the old, and prepare fresh ground for
the garden of new intentions during the first new or full moon of the season. Bless the past,
gift ourselves the present, plant seeds that envision the future. Thru ceremonial drumming,
sacred movement, songchant, guided meditation and ritual, we gather in circle, inviting our
ancestors to smile upon us from their place of witness. Bring alter objects signifying for you
past, present, and future; rhythm instruments, flowers, and drinking water.

In Brasil, everyone participates in samba, from grandparents to children. No matter their
social status or race, it's the music of the people, a communal expression of the joy of life.

Taking Your Frame Drumming to the Next Level

Welcome all who've taken Jeff's Whole Hand and Finger-style Frame Drum Workshops.
It's the oldest known, and most universal hand-drum, the non-jingled frame drum, often
called the Tar. We will continue to explore playing both the folkloric, whole-hand style,
and the more intricate, sophisticated, Arabic finger-technique. Now we add a new form,
the "Cybele" or "knee position". We will also cover snaps, brush strokes, and kititakas!
It's rhythms and sound are hypnotic! Drums provided, available for purchase, or BYO.
